Audition Requirements

All participants of AFYJC are required to audition via video or audio recording. Audio and video recordings can be made on a cell phone, tablet, or other audio or video recording device. Your acceptance to the camp is not based on the quality of your recording, however you do need to be heard. Be sure to record in a quiet location or with limited background noise. Please use quality play-along tracks, iReal Pro app, or record with a live band. Prerecorded tracks have been provided for the ensemble and Bob City applicants. See section below.
Please make sure that both the accompaniment and your instrument or voice can be heard in the recording.

All audition material must be submitted to ceadprograms@gmail.com.  Audio or Video recordings can be submitted via an unlisted Youtube link; dropbox link; or google drive link.

Further instructions:
  • Horn, String, and Vocalists click here for prerecorded tracks and chord charts. Play/sing the melody on the first chorus, improvise the second chorus (improvisation can be a transcription or original solo),  and either play/sing the melody for full final chorus or improvise 1/2 chorus, and play/sing melody half chorus for the final chorus. Singers are allowed to use their own backing tracks in order to perform the songs in a key that is more suitable for their voice.
  • Piano and Guitar players click here for prerecorded tracks and chord charts. Pianists and guitarists should demonstrate their ability to play from a chord chart. For both selections play the melody once, improvise a two-chorus solo, and then “comp” the harmony for one chorus as if you were accompanying a soloist.
  • Bass players click here for prerecorded tracks and chord charts.  Bassists should demonstrate their ability to construct bass lines from chord charts. Bassists should also demonstrate improvisation ability during the second chorus of each song.
  • Drummers click here for prerecorded tracks and chord charts.  Drummers should demonstrate their ability to keep time, and play appropriate fills. Drummers should demonstrate ability to improvise by trading 4s on the last choruses, as if trading 4s with another instrumentalist.
Due to copyright laws, lead sheets with melody will not be provided. However, the melody of the requested tunes can be obtained through any standard Fake Book.  Backing tracks were created using the iReal Pro App http://www.irealpro.com/

For Ensemble Auditions only: Play  a 32 bar excerpt of your part of  a big band, orchestra, or choir arrangement you worked on this academic year

For Improvisation Class only: Play a song of your choice with a live band or instrumental track
