About AFYJC

All Faiths Youth Jazz Camp (AFYJC) is a multi-faith community initiative presented as part of the Christian Education and Arts Division at Turning Point United Methodist Church. Located in the historic city of Trenton, NJ, AFYJC is an evening music camp during which students will work with jazz educators and recording artists from the tri-state area to foster a greater understanding of jazz improvisation and how to work in a large jazz ensemble. AFYJC will offer three large performance ensembles, and three improvisation courses.

In addition to classes and ensembles rehearsal, each day with feature a different guest artists of varying religious backgrounds who will share their experiences as musicians, and describe how their religious beliefs affect their performances of jazz and how they conduct themselves as professional musicians.

It is the camp’s mission to provide quality jazz education and to foster:

A greater understanding of jazz and its associated performance practices.
Music education and broaden each student’s performance experience through the study of advanced jazz repertoire.
A greater recognition of the spirituality in the performance of jazz.
A greater network and jazz community within the city Trenton, NJ and greater Trenton area.
A collaboration, mentorship, and connections between musicians and students.
A greater sense of community and greater sensibility towards musicians of varying religious beliefs and cultural backgrounds.
