Experience Summer Jazz Intensive 2018



All Faiths Youth Jazz Camp (AFYJC) is a multi-faith community initiative presented as part of the Christian Education and Arts Division at Turning Point United Methodist Church.  Located in the historic city of Trenton, NJ, AFYJC is an evening music camp during which students will work with jazz educators and recording artists from the tri-state area to foster a greater understanding of jazz improvisation and how to work in a large jazz ensemble. AFYJC will offer three large performance ensembles, and three improvisation courses.

In addition to classes and ensembles rehearsal, each day with feature a different guest artists of varying religious backgrounds who will share their experiences as musicians, and describe how their religious beliefs affect their performances of jazz and how they conduct themselves as professional musicians.

AFY Vocal Jazz Ensemble
Grades 6-12
Dr. Trineice Robinson-Martin, Conductor

The Vocal Jazz Ensemble is designed for singers in grades 6-12 with a minimum of 3 years ensemble experience.  In the Vocal Jazz Ensemble young singers will develop their ability to sing complex harmonies; improve jazz phrasing and articulation, improve reading skills; improve improvisation skills; and develop overall musicianship through the study and performance of advanced vocal jazz repertoire.

AFY Jazz Orchestra
Grades 6-12

Dr. Anthony Branker, Conductor

The Jazz Orchestra is designed for brass, woodwind, and rhythm section instrumentalists in grades 6-12 with a minimum of 3 years of big band experience.  In the Jazz Orchestra instrumentalists will expand their jazz vocabulary; improve jazz phrasing and articulation, enhance reading and improvisation skills; and develop overall musicianship through the study and performance of advanced jazz repertoire.

AFY Jazz Symphony
Grades 6-12

Melissa Clark, Conductor

A new opportunity for orchestral musicians in the Central Jersey Region, the AFY Jazz Symphony is designed for instrumentalists in grades 6-12 with a minimum of 3 years of orchestral experience.  String and woodwind players will have the opportunity to explore jazz philharmonic repertoire commonly unavailable through traditional academic settings.  Instrumentalists will expand their jazz vocabulary; improve jazz phrasing and articulation, enhance reading and improvisation skills; and develop overall musicianship through the study and performance of advanced jazz repertoire.

Jr. Boppers
Beginning Improvisation
Ages 7-10

Jr. Boppers is a beginning improvisation course for young musicians ages 7-10 interested in musical creativity and jazz improvisation. This course is open to singers and instrumentalist that can demonstrate facility on their instrument.  Students will be introduced to the art of improvisation, and will explore jazz phrasing, rhythm, and articulation.

Bop Start
Improvisation I
Ages 11-17

The Bop Start improvisation course is a beginning/intermediate improvisation course for instrumentalists and vocalists. Bop Start introduces concepts of improvisation over simple chord changes (i.e. Major Blues, Minor Blues, I-vi- ii-V-I), will explore jazz phrasing, rhythm, and articulation.

Bop City
Improvisation II
Ages 11-17

The Bop City improvisation course is an intermediate/advanced course designed for instrumentalists and vocalists looking to improve their improvisation skills. Bop City focuses on building a more advanced jazz vocabulary, and chord-scale relationships in the context of complex chord changes.
